Getting married in church can be a really special occasion. There is plenty of room for family and guests and the service can be tailored to your needs. The service is beautiful and uplifting and can be made very personal to you.
A wedding can take place on any day of the week, depending on the availability of the church and minister. You have many options available to you on the location of the church. Every Church of England parish allows you to get married there if you have a current or historical connection with the church and meet certain other requirements. You do not need to have been baptised, nor have been a regular church-goer. If either or both of you have been married before then a marriage can still take place at the Vicar’s discretion. You would normally need to see a member of the clergy to talk about this before the wedding can be booked.
The usual method of giving notice for a church wedding is by Banns. This is simply a public notice in the main Sunday service of your intention to get married in the church. It has to be made three times, usually on consecutive weeks, in the parish church or churches where you reside, and the church where you will get married if that is different. There are other methods available in certain circumstances so it is advisable to talk to a local Vicar as soon as possible to discuss your options.
If you are both British Citizens then the procedure is relatively straightforward, for any other situations talk to the church as soon as possible.
